torpedo factory

my favorite place to visit when i am in alexandria is
the torpedo factory art center
former torpedo factory converted into working artists' studios
situated on the potomac river

here's the link:
currently the target gallery is showing
"the language of paper"

i always walk away with inspiration
(and most times, a piece of art!)

the gates

i recently was reminded of the christo project "the gates"
when i saw the current AT&T commercial
where orange fabric is rolled over the hoover dam,
the arch in st. louis and wraps around las vegas.

i have few regrets about things i have not done in my life, but i must admit
if i had had an inkling of how important the projects of jeanne-claude and christo
were, i would have made the road trip to NYC to see "the gates" back in 2005.
now all i have is a sample of the fabric (brought back to me by someone who did make the trip)
and wonderful photographs produced by people from all over the world.

wrapped up in my own art projects at the time i did not see the display
first hand.
the photos of those glorious orange flags whipping through central park,
all the more brilliant against the snow
(was that coordinated or planned?  i wonder)
still make me happy.

urban light

the urban light installation at the los angeles county art museum

Chris Burden's Urban Light installed on the sidewalk in front of LACMA has
been one of LA's favorite and most photographed landmarks since its unveiling in
February 2008.  The piece incorporates 202 antique street lights from cities and neighborhoods
in and around Los Angeles.
