buried treasure….the possibility of i

MONDAY, JANUARY 24, 2011

the posibility of i

my very first book making assignment was to make a quick, copy paper book.  for me, this turned out not to be so quick,
though this is a book i repeatedly come back to.
as a photographer, my intent was to use photos as the content in my books.
where does an idea begin?
at the time (2004) i was making b & w collages in an attempt to be "edgy"...my photography felt too obvious, but i could cut and paste to create another dimension.
i copied some collages that i had done, further layering with vellum sheets printed with words that i felt described me and also the collage.
here are a few pages from
"the possibility of i"

i.....

unfathomable
creativity

infinite possibilities.

april 1

april, please don't fool me.

today was the first day that i could comfortably walk on the beach.
60 degrees with a strong breeze, but sunny and beautiful.

the seagulls were squawking above me and the sand was heaved into
mother nature's dunes.  but as i walked along in the sand,
i found treasures…more than i had expected.

this.  is.  why.  i moved.  here.
this sand creation looked like an alligator or crocodile

a whale breeching?
this is the real reason i walk the beach…..treasures

quilt show

recently i took my mother, who has made dozens of quilts, perhaps close to 100 counting the baby quilts for each of her great grandchildren, to the quilt show at the cleveland metro parks.

sometimes it is difficult for her to go to these shows, not because she doesn't appreciate the beauty of all of these pieces gathered in one place, but because she does not quilt any more.

her one observation was that most of the quilts were quilted by machine.  no longer do contemporary quilters do the work by hand.

here were some of my favorites.

a blessing on new beginnings

"Fair Winds and Following Seas"……... a nautical phrase of good luck--a blessing as it were--as the person, group, or thing it is said to departs on a voyage in life. It is often used at a "beginning" ceremony such as a commissioning ceremony of a ship or people, as well as in retirement, change of command, or farewell ceremonies.

throwback thursday

a particularly favorite image from my Ukraine trip last October.

this was the evening that we drove to the great Russian hall to set up for the eye clinic.
walking into the building with a giant red star lit on the front facade, we entered an
auditorium that was filled with cast off chairs and tables.

around the upper walls were painted scenes of an idyllic Russian life, with dancers and farmers, children frolicking in the fields.

i saw the sweater hanging and had to capture the image.

Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.

my new lake house
is in total destruction…..

i am rewiring the entire house,
and putting insulation and new drywall
in most of the rooms.

the house feels and looks like
a total mess.

i hope that this is not a Humpty dumpty
moment…..
and that i can put it all back together again.

The Beatles She Loves You

those were the best of times…..

and the worst of times.
1964

civil rights, JFK assassination, the Vietnam War….

and then hope.

in the form of the Beatles.
50 years ago, they made their debut.

and the beat goes on…..
