newly turned cotton fields, we stopped in webb, mississippi,
in the county of Tallahatchie, population 583.
webb was home to another friend who grew up here in the
40's and early 50's.
her grandfather, a physician and pharmacist, had a
drug store on the corner...long since taken down, either by
fire or urban blight. i found the lovely
tile floor still in evidence on the footprint of the building.
the train station across the street from the drug store,
took passengers north to the big city of Memphis.
webb is one block long, wedged between the cassidy bayou,
and the highway. empty buildings line the main street.
along the bayou, i found barns with numbered doors, perhaps
separating cotton harvests in days past.
