sounds of a saturday morning

it is amazing how many sounds you can hear
if you only listen

sitting at my patio table, sun shining, i decide
just to listen.

there is a gentle breeze blowing today,  the wind chimes
throughout the neighborhood are singing....

as are the birds. big fat robins and sleek grey morning doves cooing and fluttering about.

the breeze blows and the bamboo branches rustle

i can hear the distant sound of a train whistle, construction sounds, whispers of conversations nearby

sit still
listen

children at the neighborhood park playing soccer or lacrosse
the team and cheerleaders, the enthusiastic parents clapping and shouting encouragement

a radio playing classic 60's songs
interrupted by the start of a lawnmower

dogs barking, horns honking, the familiar "beep-beep" of a car being unlocked

listen

an old-fashioned bike bell's "drrringg", and the carnival sound of an ice cream truck

a plane overhead, mailboxes being opened and closed as the mail truck moves through the neighborhood

it is peaceful to sit here on my patio with a cup of coffee and listen to the water fountain,

the noon whistle blows
out of habit, i look at my watch.

it's Saturday, and the world is well.

This is lovely, and qualifies as a real poem. What you notice says a lot about you. Last night I finished "The Help" and started reading a book of travel writing. The introduction said this: travel writing is not about the place, it is about the person who is doing the traveling.
