for mature audiences only

WARNING:   the following images are graphic and may not be appropriate for young viewers.

as i walked along the beach, my eyes focused on searching for sea glass, i encountered a dead seagull, washed up on the sand near the rocky area toward the end of the beach.  it was hard to tell how long it had been there, but it was quite wet and didn't look very damaged.
most of my life i have lived near water, and often would encounter dead fish, eyes glazed and sometimes rotted and smelly. but i have never seen a drowned seagull and was fascinated with the sheen on the feathers, the nails on the legs, and the posture of the bird.

i took some photos, and just as i clicked the last photo, a huge wave crashed over the rocks and onto the beach.
as the water receded, the undertow took the bird back to the sea.  i stood on the shore and watched it bobble a time or two and then float delicately until i could no longer see it.

2 paths

in life you can choose 2 paths.
the path of least resistance
or
the path you can't resist.

never resist!

tabacalera ramos

on the perimeter of plaza de colon, in old san juan,  the smell of barbeque pork brought us to a kiosk where sandwiches were sold for $6.50.  it was advertised as a traditional puerto rican bbq pork sandwich sprinkled with pork rinds.  our immediate reaction was "no way"....not with pork rinds!  but then the  vendor suggested that he could crumble just a few, just to maintain its authenticity, and we decided to try it  (when in rome.....)
the sandwich was large and very tasty.  the pork rinds added a nice texture to the meat, and we were pleased with our lunch.

after we finished, we chatted with the young man about the santos and folk art he had displayed on the walls of the kiosk.  his mother is an artist, well known according to a woman who had also stopped to say hello.  among the santos there was a cup filled with cigars;  one in particular interested me with its two-toned striped wrapping. we were pointed in the direction of our hotel, and told that the "cigar man" was just down the street.

at the corner, we found rafael ramos carmona, better known as tabacalera ramos.  there were numerous cases filled with cigars of many sizes.  i asked if i might take his photo, and he immediately, but without even a nod, began to roll a cigar....
spreading the tobacco leaf                            flat and used his knife to cut it to the proper size for rolling.  i was impressed with his well manicured hands, his straw hat, his well trimmed beard, and especially with the long ash that hung from the stogie he was smoking. (it was mesmerizing, wondering if and when it would fall)

the shoe and the swimsuit

isn't this a gorgeous shoe?  the perfect shoe for puerto rico.
so beautiful (but actually walking in it looks impossible)
liz left them in the box.
the swimsuit, on the other hand, was a no-brainer for me.
i saw it, walked away, thought about it all day and went back to try it on.  it is now mine.

la playa

on our recent "retreat" in san juan, puerto rico, we spent time at 2 very different beaches in san juan. the first was in old san juan across from the capitol building.

this is the best place to find sea glass, and there was a lot of it the 2 days we were there....look closely at the photo above and you will see a few pieces we left behind.
we collected 3 quart bags full of treasures to bring home.

liz found large pieces right away.  i was searching for color....and was lucky, lucky, lucky!

the 2nd beach was the "resort" beach at isla verde.
of course, there was also the pool with the waterfall and the swim up bar.

the double lounger that looked as if the wind could catch the sail and whisk you away.
what an extraordinary adventure we had!

decoración moderna

after check-in at the el san juan hotel,  we opened the door to our room....
and inhaled!

an urban adaptation of the intense colors we left in old town.

 sunshine brought indoors!
the cool marble tiled floors felt so good after spending the day in the hot sun.
great abstract artwork throughout the space
the "ghost chair", beautiful (not so comfortable)
