yellow beets

one of my favorite things to do with colorful vegetables (besides eating them) is to cut them open and photograph them.
the textures of the whole beets with the fuzzy hairs,
the lovely patterns that the slices create...

aunt clara and uncle horace

my grandmother's sister, clara and her husband, horace
boulder, colorado
circa 1963
courtesy of my grandfather's photo collection

i never really knew them, living so far from ohio....they visited once with their daughters, (roberta and sylvia)  for a family reunion.
aunt clara was the "historian" of the family and had written a short geneological history of the family.  this was stored away with my grandmother's things with a note "do not throw away"....KEEP.
i have a copy somewhere....

i did find a letter to my grandmother dated 10/6/80,
so appropriately on that anniversary of 30 years, i will share a bit of what she said:

"as i sit here at the desk i can look out into the front field and see our "herd of goats" and they are quite an impressive sight.  Horace is letting them all graze in the front field together--the two milk goats, the one yearling and the five kids.  he watched them pretty close at first to be sure the little ones didn't start nursing again.  One of them tried several times but mama said no, so things seem to be alright.  he tied a little bell on Fawn, the oldest (mother and grandmother of the flock) and she didn't seem to mind a bit, so now she wears it all the time and i love to hear it tinkle.  part of the turkeys are out there too but the mamas and their babies are up in the garden area.  the little ones are becoming quite adept at catching grasshoppers and it is fun to watch them chasing them.  more power to 'em!!"

the letter continued on to two pages of single spaced type.  she closed with "gee it looks as tho i am trying to write a book so maybe i better call a halt.  maybe your eyes are getting tired.  loads of love, Clara"

here in the 21st century it is rare that people would write ON PAPER, so i cherish the letters and handwriting samples that i have inheritied.

white barns

red barns are quite common in Ohio, though I have been noticing that there are just as many white barns.  it raises the question as to whether white barns indicate a dairy farm as opposed to red equating beef??
if i were so inclined, i might research this, but i would rather just enjoy the beauty of each of them.

these are two barns that have not been shown on previous posts.

scarecrows and pumpkins

it's that time of year....everywhere i look there are pumpkins!
the local pumpkin patch is having a great season

every time i see a scarecrow i want to get close enough to take a photo, but too often they are out in the field on private property.  this one was just right!

at the car wash, yeh

the car wash....it seemed a good place to do sequential photos
(but i wish it had been one of those places with the strips swishing back and forth)

i can hear the song, "working at the car wash" playing in my head!

come on....clap out the rythmn, and listen to the motown sound

fibre couture

recently i saw a couture firbre booth at one of the many festivals i have attended.
as i examined the jackets, scarves, and bags, i realized that they were all made with recycled clothing.

as i often do, i thought, "I can do that!" and so came home and looked through the donation bag that i am constantly filling.  dragging out my needle and thread, i began to snip, cut, chop, and restring fabric back together.

these are from the festival:

who would pay $95 for any of these things????  i am going to try to make my own couture designs.  i'll just pretend i am on project runway.  recycle, remake, reuse.......

this is mine....i am still working on getting the right pieces together, and deciding how to deal with the sleeves....it's easy to go overboard.

though i may never wear this, i am enjoying the collage of fabrics!
