la brea tar pits

while walking along the "museum mile" on wilshire blvd, i entered a park where there appeared to be a wooly mammoth in a pond.  little did i know i had arrived at the la brea tar pits.  the water level was low but the tar covered the surface of the pond and the edges of the water and its grasses similar to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico of current history.
the tar pits are a few inches below the water of what looks like a small pond.  The smell of the tar hits your nostrils the minute you near the area.  Large bubbles pop and spit on the surface of the pond, caused by gas leaking from the tar.
The Page Museum at the La Brea Tar Pits has a fossil collection of ice age animals, which were trapped in the tar. the next time i am in L.A. i will mark time on wilshire boulevard.  i am so looking forward to spending more time in these museums.
