retreat

my BFF and i have "retreats" every 6-12 months.
We began this tradition 10 years ago in a sleepy little town on the river, an hour north and west of Paris.
the purpose of these gatherings are multiple....just to see each other, to document what's going on in our lives, to set goals for the upcoming year.
sometimes it's hard to come up with anything, since we talk to each other on a daily basis.
but always we bring "the book".  to record the event, to see how far we've come, to put on paper the questions that we don't have answers for, but hope to by the time we meet again.
my BFF and me.
i love her so.

the chouette set

chouette set (n. pl.) a term used to describe
two independent women traveling as a pair,
(not to be confused with
"sweater set"...one of the wardrobe components
necessary for travel abroad)

two gutsy women....that was our translation
(i have since found that the word "chouette"
translates to "owl")
travel journals are such fun to look back on
10+ years later i can transport myself to
Paris in an instant

an excerpt or two from journals kept on a
Paris adventure:

"this was the day of the Clingnancourt flea market, which is nothing like an American flea market. There are really beautiful antiques and architectural details mixed in with the inevitable junk. I made several expensive purchases, any of which might make one question my sanity, but I know what I love: first, a vintage bed jacket, white voile with ruffles and lace...very graceful and with beautiful tucks front and back. I will wear this and when I'm not wearing this, I'll love seeing it hanging in my new/old armoire. An art deco dustpan, actually a crumb-pan, I guess) and curved silver brush. From the 20's-all tarnished, but in beautiful shape. and a heavy, tiny bronze pigeon, also art deco-just a desk thing."

"Lunch was a baguette, apples and peaches, and cheese from a deli in Montmarte...we ate it sitting on the steps of Sacre Coeur. An old man was sitting near us and apparently was a regular: the sparrows kept sitting on his hand. But when anyone took a picture of him, he flashed them the finger and cursed. It was all very ironic, like St. Francis with an attitude."
